Hoda Kotb is the daughter of Egyptian Muslim parents, born in Norman, Oklahoma. She was raised in several places, including Morgantown (West Virginia) and Alexandria (Virginia). She and her two siblings, Adel, and Hala were also taken by her parents to Egypt and Nigeria.
She graduated from Fort Hunt High School and Virginia Tech with a BA in broadcast journalism in 1985 and 1986 respectively, remaining connected through keynote speaking engagements at graduation ceremonies as well as being elected onto Virginia Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors for three-year terms.

Hoda’s life has been marked by many milestones. One of them is her journey to motherhood. In 2013, after her divorce from Burzis Kanga in 2008, Hoda Kotb began dating New York financier Joel Schiffman. In 2019, they announced their engagement. However, Kotb revealed that in January 2022, the couple had decided to break up their engagement. They will continue to coparent their two daughters, Haley Joy, and Hope Catherine.
