Julie Johnston was born to Kristi and David Johnston. Her passion for soccer began when she joined the local AYSO. Julie and Melanie both played soccer for the Sereno Soccer Club of Phoenix. Julie was a key member of the Sereno team between 2004 and 2010, earning nine state titles while serving as captain.
Ertz graduated from Dobson High in Mesa, where she excelled academically. She was a member of the National Honor Society at that school and earned her diploma. Julie, however, chose to devote her time and energy to the Sereno Club instead of joining the soccer team at Dobson. She also volunteered as a student athlete trainer.
College Years and Professional Soccer
Ertz played college soccer from Santa Clara University between 2010 and 2013. Her outstanding performances led to her being selected as the third-best player by Chicago Red Stars in their 2014 NWSL College Draft.
